International Women's History Month 2025: Uncovering lost local history and reclaiming a name!


Gemma Campbell, chief researcher on the project, will be delivering a talk on a Remarkable Woman of Wales, Ethel Hovey. Come along to find out about where Gemma's research has led her, and discover the life of a fascinating and inspirational woman.


Gemma Campbell: In my search for local women of significance in the Colwyn Bay area, I stumbled upon a name—Miss Ethel May Hovey. It was initially a scholarship, the Rosa Hovey Scholarship at Bangor University for girls only, that led me to her, but as I dug deeper, I began to realise there was much more to her story, a story that had been lost to time.


Months of painstaking research followed. News clippings, council minutes, and footnotes slowly began to paint a picture of a woman whose legacy had faded into obscurity. Through a…
